US DOE - Promise Neighborhoods and ABCD

ABCD and Education

The US DOE has just issued a new RFP for the funding of 5-7 new Promise Neighborhood grants.  Promise Neighborhoods is a cradle to career place-based strategy that is a great opportunity for ABCD communities.  The range of funding is $4-6 million a year for 5-7 years.

Here is the link to the RFP in the Federal Register.  Federal Register :: Applications for New Awards; Promise Neighborhoods (PN) Program

Charles, great to hear from you.  Here are two of my papers that might provide some thoughts for you about ABCD and good governance.

GoToMeeting - pros & cons

Tips, Tools, Strategies, and Technology

Deb, if they can afford GTM I think is has more features and a better support base. But Anymeeting works fine for me. The free version has ads which is distracting, so you do have to buy a paid version.

Best,

Dan

GoToMeeting - pros & cons

Tips, Tools, Strategies, and Technology

Deb, I have used it a lot in the past and I think it works well. When I was CTK, I did webinar all of the time with it and there were never any problems. My only problem with it now is that it is a bit expensive for me, which is why I use Anymeeting.

Best,

Dan

Asset Maps

Asset Mapping & Gift Inventories

James, sorry so long in responding.

I would suggest that asset mapping must be done by community members themselves, so it is shared through personal connections. From my perspective asset mapping is a process of Identifying people's gifts and passions, asking them to share their gifts with their neighbors based on their passions and connecting people with the same passions to act collectively.

For you information here is a link to myAsset Mapping Toolkit.

People Do Not Need Programs

Open Discussions

Deb, you are right some people need support activities. That is why I call them activities and not programs. People do not need programs, they need the relationships and they may need some or all of the activities within a program.

I know it my just be semantics, but it help create a dialogue around the points you made.

People Do Not Need Programs

Open Discussions

Deb, great way to describe the problem when we focus on programs and services as the end result.

Thank,

Getting renters more engaged

ABCD and Community Organizing/Engagement

You can still ask them to share their gifts based on their passion in the neighborhood they live in.

advice on ABCD in a faith context

ABCD and Faith Communities

Emma, good day. This is a very exciting project and it sounds like you are on the right track. I am currently working with Methodist Ministries of South Texas to help them train their Wesley Nurses (Parish Nurses) to do asset-mapping and connecting. As you know, asset mapping is about connecting people with the same passions to act collectively and not just collecting data. Talking time to have one-on-one conversations is critical and I recommend that is starts by people interviewing people they all ready know. I do not believe door knocking builds the connections you need.

I have attached a handout of my asset mapping process. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Best,

Dan

Local Governments and ABCD

ABCD and Institutions (Universities, Hospitals, Government, Libraries, NGOs, etc.)

I wrote the attached article that was just published in this month's issue of the International City/County Management Association's monthly journal, Public Management. It is about how local governmental entities can use ABCD and Results Based Accountability to unlock community resources and drive results. I would love to start a conversation about local governments role in ABCD. Also any feedback on the article would be great.
