What resources would you recommend for someone who is just learning about ABCD?

I like the attached ABCD summary (2p PDF) from the Handbook of Applied Development Science (2 vols., 2002), under the "American Tradition of Community Development."  It makes a useful distinction between "Targeted Asset Mapping" and "Visionary Asset Mapping."

Thanks Mac, I really like that wording! At a practical level, this is what I teach/do and I have used the word "targeted" in the past & "whole of community" for a larger view but to differentiate by using the words target and visionary is well, visionary! Haha!

One of our best ABCD resources in Australia, even though it is quite old now, would have to be "Making Headway" - there are things I would change over the past decade but, it still stands pretty strong!

Asset Mapping short video

(0:03:47) via YouTube, by Occupy Sydney, on FaithInAction.net.au  This web page & video provide a good introduction and links.

"...If you have a small group of 4 or 5 people, I would contend that you have more resources in that group -- if you harness them fully -- than are needed to address (a social challenge)...""

Hi, I've created a reading list of over 100 resources on ABCD which you can find at https://sustainingcommunity.wordpress.com/2016/04/11/abcd-reading-list/

Graeme,

thank you so much for your link to the abcd-reading-list

i'm looking at it and would love to have a way to explore each and every resource

how about we put the files into a database?

or maybe they are already in a database.

---------------------------------------------------

Because it is quite a long list I have grouped them under the following headings:

  1. Some places to start
  2. General ABCD resources freely available on the internet
  3. General ABCD resources not freely available on the internet
  4. Asset-based approaches to health
  5. Other strengths-based approaches to working with communities
  6. Posts from this blog about asset-based community-driven development and strengths-based approaches

They are listed alphabetically under each heading (except for the ones in Some places to start)

--------------------------------------------------------

i like using a browser based
desktop outlining and publishing app:
http://exelearning.net
export to SCORM and html5, plus other formats

my latest install is of Sahana Eden and i need to add Ushahidi
http://www.picounion.net

Mac Johnson your link does not work anymore.

Thanks Kenneth

I'm open to the idea. I have them all listed in Endnote but it doesn't have much information in it besides the bibliographical details.

What sort of details were you thinking of including?

The biggest problem for me would be finding time to do much.

Regards
Graeme

Hello all! I work for an ABCD nonprofit in Wichita, KS - The Neighboring Movement - and we do ABCD work through the lens of neighboring - encouraging people to get to know their actual, literal neighbors (and companioning them in the midst of this process). As a part of our work, we have a podcast called The Neighbor Next Door where we interview good neighbors and ABCD practitioners in order to learn from them and be inspired by them. I hope it would be helpful for someone new to ABCD! You can check out the podcast on any podcast medium (Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play, Stitcher, etc.), and you can find more info and the links to the podcast on those mediums here: https://neighboringmovement.org/neighbornextdoor. I hope this is helpful!
