Global Gathering 10/2/10: The harvest of our conversations

ABCD and Social/Racial Justice

To see what our small groups discussed during the global gathering on 10/2/20 during our conversations about how ABCD provides a tool or lens for working toward racial and social justice, check out the amazing graphic recording by April Doner and the Jamboard filled with ideas here.

How does ABCD serve as a tool for working toward social and racial justice?

ABCD and Social/Racial Justice

At Global Gatherings this month, we're talking about ABCD as a lens/practice/approach to social and racial justice. Whether or not you're participating in those live conversations, please share your thoughts here. Some questions you might want to consider are:

  • Share a story about where you’ve been seeing work for racial and social justice happening, from an ABCD perspective.
  • How is it happening without paid intervention, when it has NOT been generated by outsider?
  • How has it been changing over time? Especially during the pandemic?
  • How has ABCD changed the way you think about and take action around racial and social justice? What are you doing differently as a community builder?

Looking for a few testers who want to test a new strength based asset based app

Tips, Tools, Strategies, and Technology

Hi David -

This sounds really interesting! I'll be sure to include your request in the next newsletter of ABCD in Action. That should go out about mid-October.

Ideas for Global Gatherings?

Connecting to each other

Many of you (52 people in fact!) have participated in our first four Global Gatherings. For those of you who haven't joined these Gatherings yet, they are opportunities for members of ABCD to engage in face-to-face conversations (via Zoom) about topics and questions that they care about. They are NOT webinars or presentations.... they are good solid story telling, question asking, idea sharing, connecting sessions that are done in small groups for just an hour.

So far, we've talked about ABCD in general and how to think about community building during a pandemic. We want to hear about what ideas you have for future Gatherings.  What questions about building communities, based on the local assets, have been on your mind? What stories do you want to hear? Add your ideas to this conversation. If you have an idea for someone from this community who might be a great host or that you'd like to hear from, let us know that as well.

If you are interested in co-hosting a session, we want to know that too! You don't need to be an "expert" and you won't be doing it alone... We'll have an experienced co-host working with you to plan and host the session.

To propose a session that you'd like to co-host, fill out this Google Form and we'll be in touch!

Building Community during a Pandemic

Coronavirus and Communities

ABCD in Action Global Gathering_2020.9.3.jpg

During our recent Global Gathering (Sept 2020), ABCD in Action members shared stories about community building that was happening naturally (led by unpaid, community members) in their communities, as well as how the pandemic was changing their own community building practice. This graphic represents some of the ideas that were shared.

How has the pandemic affected community building in your community? How have you changed how you think about building community? Do you use different tools? Different strategies? How do you STILL use community assets to build community? Share you thoughts here.

Thank you, April Doner, for capturing our conversation in the graphic above.

Tips and Ideas for Communities dealing with Coronavirus?

Coronavirus and Communities

Here's a great idea I saw from the Rural Assembly (an organization focused on rural communities)... It's called Check on Your Neighbors. Here's what they say about this...

Have you found yourself wondering how an old friend or acquaintance is doing during this remarkable, uncertain time in our nation? We would like you to join us in checking on our neighbors. It’s easy to participate.

  1. Choose someone you don’t talk to often and reach out over phone, email, facebook, or text. It could be a friend from college, a neighbor down the street, an old colleague.
  2. Ask them some questions. Try one or two of these: How is today different than a month ago? How is this situation affecting your work? How are you keeping your spirits up? What do you or the people in your work need right now? Or simply ask, how are you doing? Ask them to send you a photo that illustrates their current life.
  3. Send us a few sentences (or a few paragraphs!) below about what you heard in your conversation. Not sure what to share? Check out some examples from checking in with our neighbors here.
  4. Ask them to pay it forward and check in with their neighbor. Send them the link to this page so they can send us some information on their conversation.

I wish I'd have thought of this! What a great idea!

Deb

See the attached flyers below for some nice graphics and reminders for folks. Thanks to the Jeder Institute (Michelle Dunscomb, Dee Brooks and others) for the lovely work on this.
