ABCD Training bears fruit

Community News

Read the story: https://www.joburg.org.za/media_/Newsroom/Pages/2022%20News%20Articles/October/Residents-take-charge-of-their-own-ward-development.aspx

A few City of Joburg representatives attended an ABCD Masterclass that I and Anne Timms ran in 2019, just before Covid shut South Africa down. That year the ABCD mapping tools were used in the government's CBP (Community Based Planning) process, to great effect. Now that Covid is (hopefully) a thing of the past, CoJ has again included ABCD in the official planning processes being run across the province.

So good to see that a seed sown 3 years ago is now bearing fruit!

City of Johannesburg

Connecting to each other

Hello Ronald, welcome to the post of Community Development in Joburg! I recently relocated to KZN but I would love to connect you with my ABCD colleagues in the city to engage with you. I have worked with COGTA and UJ for a number of years and we have a growing family of ABCD (Asset-based Community-led Development) practitioners who would be a wonderful asset for you to connect with. Prof Hanna Nel at UJ has been lecturing on ABCD for many years - her email address is hannan@uj.ac.za  The contact person at COGTA is Conrad Jardine - email address conrad.jardine@gauteng.gov.za There are many more people, but Hanna and Conrad are the key contacts and they can link you with others if and when you want to expand the circle.

All the best with your new post - I think it's an exciting time for community development in South Africa - we can turn the tide!

Regards

Janine - my email is jwinspace@gmail.com if you would like to connect with me

Connecting to each other

Hi Fasoranti, if you are looking for ABCD people in Lesotho, give a shout to Thato Masupha - she is with the Department of Social Development in the government and has attended one of our ABCD masterclass sessions in South Africa. Her email address is masupha29@gmail.com

feedback? "Stories" & ABCD - Updated Asset Map + Storytelling Infographic

Asset Mapping & Gift Inventories

Hi April, I love your picture and would love to incorporate it in our training events. We focus on stroytelling as the first part of engaging with a group (Appreciative Inquiry) and our storytelling techniques include using the Tree of Life which is very powerful. If we are in a single geographic area, we also use the Timeline to find out the history of the place - also very powerful.

I love how you say that shifting the power to the citizens - making the invisible visible - is most effectively done using storytelling.

In South Africa, we desperately need to hear each other and learn to listen to each other, as well as being given the safe space to tell our stories. I am very passionate about this too - and I have become a "human book" with the Human Library global movement - another great way to share stories and break down the single story (stereotypes & prejudice).

Thanks again for sharing!
